Themed 'routes'
One of the best ways to discover the Alsace region is to follow a themed route. These include:

- the Green route (la route verte). A 230km-route linking communities on both sides of the Rhine from Titisee-Neustadt to Contrexéville. Popular with cyclists, walkers and motorists.

- the Wine road (la route du vin) - a 75-mile route along the Eastern side of the Vosges moutains which takes in the region's best wine-making towns and villages. You can drop in to taste wine-growers' wines and spirits (note that some prefer you to call beforehand).

- the Route des Crêtes Take a walk along the mountain ridge between the Grand Ballon and Holhneck. The views are spectacular on a clear day.

- the Roman Road (route Romane) not a physical Roman road, but an itinery that stretches from Wissembourg to Feldbach and takes in a number of museums, historic sites and cultural centres.

- the Rhine Road (la route du Rhin). Take a steam train from Volgelsheim station to Sans Soucis (12km) to see the lesser-known parts of the Rhine river basin (factories and forests). Then embark on a 1.5 hour river trip.

- the Fried Carp Road (la route du carpe frite). A string of accredited restaurants in the Sundgau serving the regional speciality of fried carp.
